13 + 1. For the Bird watchers

Discover the Tranquil Magic of Inverloch’s Ayr Creek Walk & Lagoon

Calling all nature lovers and birdwatchers — the Ayr Creek Walk is one of Inverloch’s best-kept secrets, especially in the cooler months. Tucked away on the quieter side of Inverloch lies a hidden gem for nature lovers and birding enthusiasts — the Ayr Creek Walk. This peaceful bush and wetland trail winds its way through native vegetation and opens out to one of the most ecologically rich and visually striking areas in the region: the Ayr Creek Lagoon.

You being your walk at the end of Nesci Court (plenty of parking available). This trail is more than just a scenic walk — it’s an invitation to step into the world of over 75 bird species, including seasonal visitors and permanent residents. Expect to spot the melodic Honeyeaters, the soaring Black-shouldered Kites, and a mix of wetland waders, shorebirds, and beach-nesting birds. Depending on the time of year, especially in winter and spring, the lagoon transforms into a dynamic wetland spectacle when high seas or storm surges breach the sand barrier, connecting the lagoon to Bass Strait. It's a sight that captivates birdwatchers, photographers, and coastal ecologists alike.

The Ayr Creek Lagoon itself is a sanctuary for both resident and migratory birds, including egrets, spoonbills, dotterels, and terns, making it an ideal spot for setting up the binoculars or camera for a while. The surrounding creeklines and swales provide food, shelter, and nesting ground, making every visit a unique opportunity to spot something new.

While dogs are welcome, they must remain on leash at all times to protect this sensitive habitat and the nesting birds that call it home.

Whether you're a dedicated birder with a life list in hand or simply someone who finds joy in the sound of birdsong on the breeze, this immersive walk is a reminder of how closely our coastal town connects with nature.

📸 Pro tip: Bring a bird guidebook or use a birding app to help identify the many species you’ll encounter — and don’t forget your camera.

Ready to tick off some lifers and enjoy a peaceful bush-meets-coast walk? Inverloch’s Ayr Creek Walk awaits.
