State Coal Mine Underground Tours

Descend into Wonthaggi’s mining past on a guided underground adventure, exploring local history, heritage and remarkable stories beneath the surface.

When: Daily; underground tours depart at 11.30 am and 2 pm and run for 60–90 minutes. The site is open 10 am–4 pm, and the café operates 9 am–4 pm.

Cost: Above-ground attractions are free. Underground tours: adults $24; children aged 5–15 years $12.40. Check the website for current pricing.

About the experience

Discover Wonthaggi’s coal-mining heritage on a guided underground tour. Visitors walk down a steep 300-metre slope into the mine and return by the same route. Safety helmets are supplied and must be worn underground.

Important visitor information

The tour is not suitable for children under five.

·       Visitors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

·       The tour is not suitable for visitors who use mobility aids, including walking sticks, frames or wheelchairs.

·       A good level of fitness is required. The experience may not be suitable for anyone with an injury or health concern that could be aggravated by the activity.
