Bunurong Environment Centre

The Bunurong Environment Centre (BEC) in Inverloch is home to a world-class Shell Museum and Marine Display, our environmental Shop along with a Discovery Room.

The collection in the Shell Museum and Marine Display is curated by volunteers who are members of the Malacological Society of Australasia. The museum contains over 8,000 specimens on display, a Victorian collection is housed along the back wall, and all can be found in Victorian waters. You can even view a Hawksbill Turtle shell (critically endangered) and a shell of a Green Turtle – most common in Australian tropical waters, or a whale bone found April 2026 washed up locally at Point Smythe.

The Bunurong Environment Centre is an excellent starting point to learn more about environmental, climate change issues affecting the Bunurong Coast. The Discovery Room presents environmental videos and posters, dinosaur fossils, archaeological exhibits and hands-on touch tables for kids. It also provides toys and drawing projects and offers much to enthral and educate children while parents browse the shop, Shell Museum.

The Shop sells a large range of specialist books; sustainability, birds, bee keeping, Australian Flora and Fauna, Indigenous culture, local history, climate change, educational kids’ books and many more. Along with STEM kits, local giftware, Australiana, environmentally aware products, gift cards.

Outside the building on Ramsey Street is our Shy Albatross seat. You can measure your wingspan, you simply sit in the middle of the seat, spread your arms and measure your wingspan.

The BEC’s knowledgeable volunteers, brimming with passion and expertise, guide visitors through the displays, ensuring visitors of all ages leave with a profound appreciation for the intricacies of nature.
