  • Kongwak’s story began in the late 1800s when farmland was first selected and cleared for agriculture. Dairy farming quickly became the backbone of the community, leading to the establishment of the Kongwak Butter Factory and cooperative businesses that supported local farmers.

    Over time, the town developed essential community landmarks including a post office, school and town hall, forming the foundations of the close-knit rural community that still exists today.

    Today, Kongwak remains a quiet farming district surrounded by rolling paddocks, gum-lined roads and the scenic foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges.

  • The Kongwak Market is the town’s biggest attraction and one of South Gippsland’s favourite Sunday destinations. Running every Sunday from 10am to 3pm, the market is packed with stalls selling vintage treasures, collectables, plants, books, handmade goods and more.

    The market has a relaxed country atmosphere where visitors can browse unique finds, chat with locals and enjoy the lively community vibe that makes Kongwak special.

    From Korumburra, you can cycle south toward Leongatha or north toward Loch and Nyora — making it a fantastic hub for outdoor adventures.

  • Beyond the market, Kongwak offers plenty for visitors looking to explore the countryside.

    The town features a community reserve with walking tracks through tall gum trees, providing a peaceful place for a short bushwalk or picnic.

    Visitors can also discover historic sites including the old butter factory buildings, the charming town hall and the local Avenue of Honour memorial trees planted in honour of local soldiers.
